Any good song deserves a remix, hence the first collection from Semisquare Music – a boutique indie label created to feature the music of jenn mierau, Hollis P Monroe and Leon Louder.

Hum, the original version, is the product of a collaboration between two old friends and a flash of inspiration. After reconnecting on Facebook (of course), jenn mierau noticed the beautiful poetry that Ursula Kowcun had been posting and asked if she could try to write a song with them. Months later, on a quick break from an intense studio session, jenn, having had several musical ideas for one of Ursula’s poems, sat down at her Wurlitzer with the text and pressed “record.” To her amazement, the song basically wrote itself, and its original acoustic form, heard here, retains the raw feel of that moment of creation.

Leon Louder’s mix brings out the darkly dramatic undertones of mierau’s vocal, wrapping it intimately around a gauzy tech-dub frame decorated with scattered synth lights, like a ghost-spaceship passing in the night.

In almost direct contrast, Hollis P Monroe’s mix presents a surprisingly optimistic, feel-good vibe while retaining the melancholy house edge for which he’s best known.
